Importance of trees in our lives is prominent
The prevailing situation in the world and Kenya at large
has set the environment back in many ways.During the Covid-19
period, people were told to stay at home and and there was no mention of
maintaining the environment.Trees provide food, medicine, shelter, rain and
furniture etc.ln some communities in Kenya when a child is born,a tree
is planted so that when the child reaches secondary school, the tree will
be used to pay school fees for the child as another one is planted. As
the rains have started,it is a high time people were encouraged to plant
trees for the benefit of the economy. A visit to the rural areas, you
find that trees are very few and this inconviniences farmers that when
they have to fetch firewood, they have to make a trip to the forest. The
government should encourage schools, colleges, University and
institutions to plant trees in their premises and in the areas lacking
trees. There is a demand in Traditional medicine (T M) this is like 50%
of all drugs in Kenya .A tree planting day should be set aside in Kenya
so that schools and institutions can plant trees in Kenya and increase
tree coverage in Kenya. There is a disaster of the increasing and rising
of the lake phenomenon where Lake Baringo,Nakuru,Elementaita,Turkana and
Naivasha have flooded homes,game resorts,camps,
schools and villages. This is a result of very few trees planted thereby
degrading the environment. The forest cover must be increased to attain
the 10 per
cent forest cover as per the presidential directive by 2022. Recently
the education CS Prof Magoha reteriated the importance of trees in the
education setting by requesting schools to use trees as classrooms to
help in the fight against the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore
trees are life and we must plant more trees.
