THE HEALTH DOCKET SHOULD GO BACK TO THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
About 40,000 Kenyans are diagnosed with cancer annually,
and the disease kills about 15,000 people every year, according to the
Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. The national government should be
keen on equipping hospitals so that they offer better treatments to the
sick in Kenya. This is because we have had very many senior people in
Kenya seeking medical treatment outside Kenya. Sorry state for us all.
They should be the first to face it since they have the tools to fix it.
This include Governor of Bomet, Governor of Homa bay, Governor of
kisumu,M p of kibera and lately we lost safaricom CEO Bob Collymore etc.
Nine MPs and four Senators are among thousands of Kenyans being treated
for cancer in Indian hospitals, a legislator who was successfully
treated for brain cancer and M P for .Juja Francis Munyua Waititu,
popularly known as Wakapee. When he was in India he interacted with
senior Kenyan government officials and well-known businessmen being
treated for cancer in India.Waititu said most of the public figures are
suffering in silence secretly and cannot seek treatment in Kenya, partly
because of the stigma associated with advanced chronic diseases. Nobody
wants to talk about it because of the stigma behind it. Leaders are not
fulfilling their mandate which included improving the national health
care system because they go abroad for treatment. In India, there are
hundreds of cancer patients from Kenya alone. Among them were nine of
MPs and four Senators. The cancer scourge is enormous and the National
government can no longer afford to bury its heads in the sand. We must
get out and talk about it,” Approximately 10,000 Kenyans travel abroad
every year in search of treatment and end up spending at least Sh10
billion in the same period, according to the ministry of Health. Can
this figure jolt the national government to action and allocate more
funds to recruit doctors, pay them well and they further their studies? I
believe Kenya has the neglected its doctors resulting in many Kenyans
suffering many diseases. Doctors need to research and their research
tabled in forums so that the environment improves, food to be checked
for any diseases and also early diagnosis of patients. When people go to
hospital when they are late in diagnosis, this leads to expensive
treatment and some patients succumbs to their diseases which would have
been treated early. Look at the strike of doctors in Kirinyaga County.
It means the whole population is affected. Children are missing
immunization, pregnant women do not go late for clinic checks, teachers,
civil servants and residents are forced to seek treatment outside
Kirinyaga County. This leads to the employees being away from their work
stations and are late for work. School children miss teachers in
school. A 2015 survey by the ministry of Health found that 40 per cent
of Kenyans who travelled overseas for treatment had renal (kidney)
diseases. At least 21.2 per cent had cancer, 11.8 per cent had a spinal
disease, 5.6 per cent had joint and bone diseases, 1.9 per cent had
connective tissue disorders, while 1.6 per cent had peripheral vascular
disorders. Patient chose to go abroad because of lack of enough
specialists and specialized medical equipment, long waiting periods,
especially for cancer treatment and kidney transplants, and the high
cost of treatment in Kenya. Governors don't trust the doctors they train
and the health facilities they build. This means that they do not
believe in what they do. Let health be returned to the national
government as it has failed in the County and every now and again
doctors are on strike as Counties cannot meet their demands which are
genuine. The shocking part is in Kenya we have jobless doctors. 75 per
cent of cancer patients seeking treatment in India can be treated in
Kenya for less money. Screening for cancer, diabetes and other related
diseases should be made free. Functioning cancer screening and treatment
center in Kenya which would cost between Sh1.5 and Sh2 billion should
be started. We would be having the best healthcare if all the money lost
in corruption was diverted to improving the same and our leaders
trusted in our hospitals by investing in them and paying doctors
well. Are Kenyan hospitals fake? And should poor Kenyans be treated at
fake hospitals? Some Counties have even appointed people in the health
docket who are not doctors or are in the medical fraternity.
