Seafarers day is an important occasion in Kenya
Seafarers day was celebrated in the Catholic cathedral on Sunday 14 by Archbishop of Mombasa Diocese Bishop Martin kivuva. This is the second week of July commemorated in the whole world. The Pope has appointed a cardinal who oversee seafarers activities in Rome.Seafarers leave their families behind and sometimes do not come back as some die.The Archbishop said that they help ship cars, computers, household items, clothing etc across the ocean. They sometimes can be in the sea for many months. The Archbishop said that we should visit them and show love because without them cars which help us move from one place to another would not be here. They suffer loneliness, sickness and they are not allowed to have any money on them.lt is good that a Bandari college was
started to train seafarers. Recently in the news there were seafarers who are stranded in Somali and claim to be mistreated and asked to be brought back home. The Archbishop has appointed a committee composed of sisters and other lay people who are incharge of seafarers welfare. There are retired seafarers who should be honored for the work they did. They brought in Kenya foreign exchange. They entertainment their friends with tales of the adventures they encountered at sea. They can be recognized by their dressing in Mombasa. Some used to dress like pirates. In Mombasa there is a famous club called pirates. ln Mombasa seafarers commemorate this day by an interdenominational service in the mission to seamen club.Let this seafarers day be recognized by the government so as to give the seafarers more recognition.
