U N Sh 1.2 billion will help reduce gender based violence in Kenya
Violence against women is any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. The 1993 Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women called on States to promote research, collect data and compile statistics relating to the different forms of violence against women, especially domestic violence. It also encouraged research on the causes, nature and consequences of violence against women and on the effectiveness of measures to prevent and redress it. The elimination of such violence has been increasingly recognized as a priority for the international community. A man recently admitted that he used to locks his wife inside his house because he was insecure,as the woman may ran away. Women are the most battered lot. It is estimated that 35 per cent of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or sexual violence by a non-partner at some point in their lives.At least 70 per cent of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime. Violence can lead to a reduced ability of a woman to work, care for her family and contribute to society. Witnessing violence in childhood can also result in a range of behavioural and emotional problems. This Aid of 1.2 billion has come at a better time because at the moment in Kenya, there are nomination of the run up to elections and many women have been beaten and injured by their opponent and it is a high time information which is crucial will come a long way of helping the women. This money can create employment in kenya through employing outreach officers who can visit the women or set up camps to sensitize women about their rights as well as visit schools, colleges and universities. Rape against women,girls and boys is mostly perpetuated by people they know or are familiar with. There is an important role played by the civil society, and especially women’s groups, both in terms of bringing about reform and monitoring implementation of gender based violence. Intimate partner violence comprises the bulk of gender based violence. The five pillars namely prevention, protection, programming and partnership will play a crucial role in reducing gender-based violence in Kenya. In Kenya 45 per cent of women and 44 percent of men aged between 15- 49 have experienced physical violence since the age of 15 years.ln the society, there is a varying degree of how women and girls are subjected to physical, sexual and psychological abuse that cuts across lines of income, class and culture. Such violence is recognized as a violation of human rights and a form of discrimination against women, reflecting the pervasive imbalance of power between women and men.The 1.2 billion pact to the gender ministry,will go a long way of reducing gender based violence in Kenya, thanks to United Nation.
