LET PASTORALISTS PLANT TREES ON THE ONSET OF RAIN AND DIG WELLS
According to a November 2016 report published by the National Drought Management Authority, pastoralists in arid regions have suffered huge losses. Many animals have died and that is what they depend on. But we are in catch 22 situation. The herders have invaded private ranches with impunity and there has been loss of lives as well as some who have been injured and property looted and some burnt. Wild life have also been affected as poachers have taken advantage of the confusion and killed elephants, giraffes,Buffaloes and other endangered animals. I shed tears when l saw the destruction of properties and investments as a result of invasion by herders and we are heading to the general election. This invasion can spark very bad consequences. Let us avoid these situations and leaders should learn to preach peace always. This is unacceptable as Kenyans should strive to live in harmony with one another and value other peoples property. There is climate change and pastoralists and livestock keepers are most affected by climate change. To mitigate these effects it is a high time pastoral communities changed with the changing climate by planting trees on the onset of rains and digging wells as well as underground storage tanks. How much can governors and the national government set aside for wells and underground tanks to avoid these situations? Those living in arid and semi arid areas should learn to appreciate whenever it rains. Rain is not for farmers alone. ln order to appreciate when it rainfall pastoralists should plant trees which grow quickly as well as those which grow in the Arid and semi Arid areas. Trees will give them shed, trees will attract rain and excess carbon dioxide (CO2) caused by many factors is a building up in our atmosphere and contributing to climate change. Trees absorb CO2, removing and storing the carbon while releasing the oxygen back into the air. Trees provide shelter and habitat for wildlife; trees absorb dust, wind and increase property value. Trees bring beauty and in some communities, cases are determined under trees. Trees cool the air by releasing water vapor into the air through their leaves. Trees conserve energy, save water, prevent water pollution, prevent soil erosion, and shield children from ultra violet rays. Trees provide food, trees heal, trees bring security and create economic opportunities. lt is a high time pastoralists appreciate and take care of the ground they graze their animals. Whenever animals are tired they can relax underneath trees. Also trees can give them medicine, furniture and wood to build their houses. Therefore it is up to the pastoralists to do or die if they decide on planting of trees and other shrubs which can resist drought to mitigate the effect of climate change. The declaration of famine year in year out is a shame to Kenya as a country. Let us learn permanent lessons.
