My grandson is in a nursery school and he likes new friends, so when l introduce him to an older friend and he meets the friend again, he becomes very excited and starts telling us that his "ndugu" brother has come. l mulled over his utterance and realized that, why did he choose  the word 'ndugu' and not use another word like "rafiki" or use the friends name and l realized that the word "ndugu" makes his friendship with other children be more real and binding. He also attaches the friendship to be long lasting and be like his brother. Millions of Tanzanian started calling each other 'Ndugu' meaning brother or sister, to underscore the nation's commitment to equality and the belief entitled to equality that no human being is better than another. Tanzanian call each other " ndugu"  while Ugandans call each other  sebo and nyabo, sir and madam. What do Kenyan call each other? Is it mmeru, mkamba, mbaluhya, mkikuyu, mjaluo, muhindi, mwarabu, msomali etc why call each other by their tribe? This is what causes tribalism in Kenya. We call each other by our tribes but not "ndugu" and not comradeship as each other identifies him/herself with their tribe. Tanzanian and Ugandan salutation brings brother and sisterhood, comradeship, compassion, friendship, peace, love, and unity. The late president of Tanzania mwalimu Julius Nyerere instilled in the people of Tanzanian Egalitarian values and ideals which shaped Tanzanian national character, transforming the country into egalitarian society in which the vast majority of the people saw each other as equal human being entitled to equality across the spectrum. That is sharp contrasts to Kenyans where ruthless competition under capitalism literally transform Kenya into a man eat man society. Tribalism is not a problem in Tanzania as the late president Julius Nyerere united Tanzanian into one people, an achievement that tribalism and racism were banished from national life. The people see themselves as Tanzanians. Look at Kenya,a tribe is your first identity and next your political party is known. People are nearly losing their land and houses to fraudsters.Maasai and the Nandi are fighting over land, the pokot, samburu and Turkana are fighting for scarce resources. People burn thieves and those suspected to be witches without tabling evidence. This is truly shocking to people of Tanzanians and Ugandans who call one another brother, sister, sir and madam to witness Kenyans hacking one another with pangas and burning one another is really shocking. Is this real or it is a movie? We have designated areas where such and such a tribe reside. This tribal disease must end in Kenya. Such hatred is unthinkable in Tanzania. Tribalism remains the single most corrosive debilitating influence plaguing modern Africa in its quest for democracy and development. Keith Richburg in his book 'out of America: A black man confronts Africa'. Let Kenyans embrace a true sense of nationalism to stop ethnic division within us during this electioneering year.
