Let Mombasa County pick low hanging fruits in tourism

Let Mombasa County pick low hanging fruits in tourism Kenya Secondary school Principals always have their yearly conference in Mombasa. This involves all Principals in Kenya. There are very many Principals who visit Mombasa County with friends and relatives and it is a high time Mombasa County made some changes.Let the town be made clean and sparkling.Let street lights from the area around Elephant tusks and up to Cannon towers in Moi avenue towards the port be installed with street lights. At night it is in darkness and this can attract insecurity. Many residents fear walking at night because of lack of street lights. With the coming visitors, who will come with their friends, let Mombasa County look beautiful and attractive.Mombasa County can sponsor traders who can sell curio shells, lessos, vitenge, bangles, wood carvings, coconut and it's products etc Apart from promoting the traders, the County can earn revenue.Let the beaches have mobile toilets as there are no toilets in the beache

Dear Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua or Riggy G

Dear Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua or Riggy G Thank you for the many things you are doing for Kenya and especially recently when you championed the removal of delocalization in teaching proffession.l will urge you to follow it up as some teachers have complained that they have not received transfer letters as the County directors are still dragging their feet.Let your directive be followed. The aim of this letter is to request you to rein on radios in the Country. Each radio station except religious ones, have paybills or they are running betting programs from morning to evening. You cannot open a radio station without being asked to send money so as to win this or that. After 3 minutes they remind listeners again to send between 50/- and 100/- to their paybills.lmagine recently people who applied for hustler fund and got 500/- and above, some spent their money on this betting on radio.Radio's have failed to give news, information, entertainment and education and they are capitaliz

Let us take care of older people in our society

Let us take care of older people in our society On 14th December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (resolution 45/106). The New York commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons 2022 highlight was “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women” in successfully navigating today's myriad of global challenges. In Kenya this day ended quietly. This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna lnternational Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly. In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons ( resolution 46/91).In 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing adopted the Madrid lnternational Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all a

Stop massage parlours in the streets of Nairobi

Stop massage parlours in the streets of Nairobi It was a culture shock to see in the CBD of Nairobi message parlour operating openly. Just along river road opposite bus stations there are stands used by shoe shiners to shine shoes for clients. On the opposite of the shoe shine stand, other clients are seated and the are being massaged from feet to soles of the feet in the open. There is no running water. This was unbelievable and not ethical. Let Nairobi County and the new Governor ban such activities as they are not normal massages. The activities should be done in enclosed areas where there is running water. There are school going children who pass by or young people going to colleges or about their activities and seeing such activities, means painting a very bad picture in their minds.Let the shoe shine stands be used for cleaning shoes and repair only. WHERE ARE ELECTIONS CAMPAIGN FUNDS ON THE GROUND?

WHERE ARE ELECTIONS CAMPAIGN FUNDS ON THE GROUND? The Election Campaign Financing Act, which also sought to ban contributions by foreign governments, was passed in 2013 with a rider that it would take effect in 2017.A Presidential candidate is allowed to spend up to a maximum of KES 5.2 billion ($44.3m), while governors, senators and female representatives get a limit of KES 433 million ($3.69m). By comparison, the monthly minimum wage in Kenya is KES 15,201 ($131).These funds can pay salaries for employees for many months. Kenya has 47 counties, implying that successful senators will spend a total of 1.8 billion shillings (US$18 million) to win their seats. To successfully run for the Woman Representative seat, an aspirant needs US$240,000 this year 4.8% higher than the US$228,000 that a successful candidate spent five years ago. Kenya’s parliament has 47 such representatives, implying total spending in excess of US$11 million by the successful candidates. An MP will require an averag

It is not prudent to spend 10 million as allowances to monitor desks distributions to schools

It is not prudent to spend 10 million as allowances to monitor desks distributions to schools It was a shock that Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha admitted that his staff used 10 million in 2020 to pay daily subsistence allowance to staff from the headquarter to monitor the distribution of desks to schools. How much were the desks worth? School are grappling with low funding leading to principals to reduce food ration in schools. Some schools have done away with BOM staff as a result of low Funding. Many school children did not have school fee for the whole year and had to be assisted by well-wishers while 10m was spent on monitoring.Thia is kenya. This is unacceptable! There are education officials in all 47 Counties in Kenya. Therefore for the staff to come from headquarters to monitor the distribution of desks to schools is duplicating the tasks.Let those who engaged in monitoring the desks refund the money as they receive salaries every month.Auditor general has t

NTSA is asleep while buses are breaking rules

NTSA is asleep while buses are breaking rules I chanced to travel by a night bus from kakamega to Nairobi and l was baffled by what l observed. There are buses plying kakamega,Busia,Kisumu, migori, kitale and other major towns. These buses are breaking rules as well as endangering the lives of passengers. On one side of the front windscreen are destinations written in bold and coloured letters of various destinations. These letters hinder the driver from view on the left side of the windscreen.NTSA has seen and has not taken action against these buses. Can they take action now especially after the Nithi bridge accident.Let passengers lives be safeguarded regardless of the wishes of the owners of buses. Repair the pathetic roads in majengo kingorani

Repair the pathetic roads in majengo kingorani Mombasa County is a tourist destination and it should be kept as clean and roads maintained as possible. But a cursory glance on roads from kingorani towards mvita, the roads have very deep potholes which is dangerous to road users. After the roundabout towards the railway station that is the worst section.Drivers have to give space to each other to access the areas with murram in order to move ahead. Also from majengo market the situation is still bad.Where is KeNHA and Kura. Where is Kenya Roads board which is mandated in helping improve safety for public roadway users? They also bring roads to a maintainable standard with optimum use of local resources. Let us encourage skill acquisition by the youth to stem unemployment

Let us encourage skill acquisition by the youth to stem unemployment Kenya has over 6 million people who are unemployed, majority being the youth.ln order for the youth to be relevant in this 21th century, they should acquire skills which can make them employ themselves as jobs are scarce. Young graduates should join TVET institutions to gain practical experience to expand their employability.15,547 candidates who scored C+ and above in the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination snubbed universities while some opted for diploma and certificate courses like ICT, plumbing, tailoring, chef, communications in technical institutions.Students are preferring to join TVETs, a sign that the government’s efforts to grow enrolment in the institutions is bearing fruit.According to President Ruto during his inauguration speech, said that the youth are termed criminals when they don't have jobs. The President promised to create jobs for the youth. By acquiring skills they c

LET IEBC EMPLOY PEOPLE WITH INTEGRITY

LET IEBC EMPLOY PEOPLE WITH INTEGRITY It is sad that we are again back to square one. This is because of fellow Kenyans who have less regards to intergrity. There are figures doing rounds in WhatsApp groups which show that the figures given are suspicious. These figures show that more people voted in particular stations than those registered to vote there. Why do people interfere with the smooth running of IEBC to bring back Kenya from where we came from? How do you move around in Bomas with documents and laptops instead of going to listen to results? The security forces also slept on their job. Some of the activities were screen shot from inside bomas. Were the security manning the gate only but not looking at CCTV to act on these misdeeds? When will IEBC get employees of integrity? Children are going back to schools and colleges, what do they learn from these elections malpractices? Kenya is a respected Country and the whole world was watching with bated breath for the smooth conclusion

Political parties should support PWD's to contest in the coming August general elections

Political parties should support PWD's to contest in the coming August general elections IEBC chair has announced that the general elections will be held in August 9th 2022.People with disabilities have not been favoured in the ongoing campaign and they are not sure to be nominated either.People with disabilities lack capacity and endure harmful attitudes. They also face a lot of stereotypical attitudes, as they are played down and not treated as part of the team in politics. Money is another challenge because running an election campaign without significant resources is extremely difficult. Women with disabilities have difficult  participating in politics as they are even more discriminated and seen as incapable to lead.Women with disabilities should be taken into consideration when supporting women’s political participation. The people with disabilities are frown upon and those who have shown that they would like to contest are not given support from the leaders of political part

Let parents come easy on the school reports brought at home by students

Let parents come easy on the school reports brought at home by students A report is the final representation of the student's grade for a class. School progress cards serve an important role in allowing teachers, students and parents to track how well the student does throughout the year. In turn, this gives students a chance to correct study habits, modify their behaviors and make other changes to keep themselves on a positive academic course. Reports are documents designed to record and convey information to the reader.Other reports summarize past events, present current data, and forecast future trends. While a report may have conclusions, propositions, or even a call to action, the demonstration of the analysis is the primary function. With school progress cards, students have the chance to identify their improvement needs and make changes to bring their grades up before the final report cards are released. Teachers can track how well their students are doing in class and lear

Degree not needed to run as M P is very unfair indeed

Degree not needed to run as M P is  very unfair indeed I received the news that the High Court has annulled a section of the Elections Act 2012  requiring those aspiring for election as MP's to have University degrees with shock. To quote the late state man of South Africa Nelson Mandela who posited "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”  “The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation. How can Kenya improve technologically and improve in innovations so as to create job opportunities and attain vision 2030 which is 8 years to go but only through Education. This quote by Nelson Mandela is one of the most famous qoutes on the value of education. Nelson Mandela also added that no country will develop and improve without the citizens being educated. An educated person knows how to acquire desired skills by identifying and utilizing available

Let authorities ban graffiti writings on walls

Let authorities ban graffiti writings on walls Kenya will have it's general elections on 9th August 2022.But campaigns started since last year 2021.Campaigns in Kenya are usually followed by graffiti writings on the walls. To identify a candidate, one just reads the graffiti and automatically identifies the names of candidates who will vie in that area.Unfortunately the graffiti have defaced walls in very many buildings in Kenya and elections are three months to go. Election graffiti have also turned the mundane walls of the Kenyan buildings lively during this poll times, registering the candidates’ names, symbols and parties in the minds of the public. Once synonymous with the vibrant atmosphere of the election season, the graffiti no longer enjoys the glory of its past, with candidates depending a lot more on new age avenues like phone marketing, private agencies and social media to drum support for themselves. Graffiti is a form of visual communication, usually illegal, involving

Let Presidential candidates have more time with their deputies

Let Presidential candidates have more time with their deputies We now have over 50 Presidential candidates for the August 2022 general elections. The Presidential candidates with many supporters like Raila Odinga and William Ruto have up to Monday deadline to name their running mates. Many people have given them suggestion of names and in Azimio there was a panel formed to conduct suitability interviews, which invited potential running mates for interview. The bone of contention is the time the Presidential candidates have been given to name their preferred deputies. They had been given an earlier date but it was moved forward after they complained.A deputy President will work with the President for five years to govern the country, ensure policies are implemented,to advice the President and when the President is away, to work on his behalf and many other duties. So to give a Presidential candidates less than a month to chose a running mate is a very hasty decision.ln February the Registr

LET PRINCIPALS DE-LINK UNIFORM FROM SCHOOL FEES SO AS TO ATTAIN 100 PERCENT TRANSITION

LET PRINCIPALS DE-LINK UNIFORM FROM SCHOOL FEES SO AS TO ATTAIN 100 PERCENT TRANSITION Uniform is an identity of a particular school or institution. But the issue of uniform has been added in school fees and it is hindering access to education. In the late 90’s,2000 and 2021, the issue of uniform was not in school fees and many students could access education.During the same time principals could allow a student to continue with education while putting on the uniform they came with, till they were able to afford new uniform. But it is not happening. But now days, heads of institutions have realized that uniform should be part of fees and it is denying poor students access to education. Many of secondary schools have imposed exorbitant charges for school uniform in the fee structure. Some  parents have taken to social media platforms to register their disapproval of the move by the schools to charge as much as Sh30,000 for uniform. Some schools either referred the parents to select unif

STOP GAMBLING ADVERTS ON TV AND RADIO SAME LIKE CIGARETTES

STOP GAMBLING ADVERTS ON TV AND RADIO SAME LIKE CIGARETTES Gambling can stimulate the brain's reward system much like drugs or alcohol can, leading to addiction . There are many companies which are doing the business of betting or gambling in Kenya.    If you have a problem with compulsive gambling, you may continually chase bets that lead to losses, hide your behaviour, deplete savings, accumulate debt, or even resort to theft or fraud to support your addiction.   G oing overboard can transform what should be an occasional source of enjoyment into a mental dependence.  Pathological gambling  is  regarded as a compulsion, motivated by the need to relieve anxiety.  Gambling excessively can lead  to  dramatic alterations in the way the brain sends chemical messages ,  and gamblers often have genetic or psychological dispositions that make them prone to gambling too much. These factors can initiate a person’s downward spiral into addiction.  Recently a gambling company started an ad

Bumps erected Countrywide should be regulated as they are a cause of accidents

Bumps erected Countrywide should be regulated as they are a cause of accidents The Kenya National Bureau of Standards (KEBS) published the design standard in November 2000 but it has largely been ignored. The standard  KS774:2000  says that  the maximum height of a speed bump is 10cm above the road surface, but in exceptional circumstances, the height can be increased to 20cm.ln Kenya there are very many speed bumps and with varying sizes and shapes and they need to be removed or be reduced. In 1999, the Department for Transport announced that speed bumps must be a minimum height of 2.5cm and maximum height of 10cm. This then means that drivers must slow down to a speed of around 5mph to navigate a road speed bump without damage.Speed bumps are to be affixed for an area to have a  20 mph speed limit and where there are street lights and low traffic. Areas that are well-lighted with the vigorous speed of vehicles are especially main areas where speed bumps and humps should be installed.1
