 Traders in kitale town have little space to do business

It was a shock when Kenya Railways reclaimed land which had been not in use in Kitale town.The traders had built business places such as shops,booking offices, hotels,washrooms etc.The corporation said​ that the businesses, m

ost of which had been constructed as permanent structures and valued at millions of shillings, encroached on land​ it owns.​ Some residents were caught unawares with some threatened retaliation on the de


molishion.Some residents were teargased when they held demonstrations against the move by KRC.
It is not clear whether they were given sufficient notice to vacate the land as some were seen trying to salvage their properties from the rubble.
After many years it was impossible to identify that the land belonged to the Kenya railway.All these structures were demolished to pave way for the railway land and fenced it.Some victims claimed that the notice issued was short arguing that they had leased the land​ for between 25 and 30 years.The elephant in the room is the size of the land.It is equal twice to the size of Kitale town.This demolition rendered over 1,000 people jobless.These people depended on the business which was on the land to eke their living.Now many people are jobless as a result of the land being taken away.Kenya Railway is also part of the government. In Mombasa town there are many properties of Kenya Railways which have been grabbed but the Kenya railway management has not done to the land the way they did in kitale town.Let the Governor and elected leaders in Transzoia come together and request Kenya Railway to give part of their land to​ Transzoia Government so that they can utilize it through business as the train may not come to Transzoia soon.Taking the land is like dividing a whole into two parts.It was sad to see large tracts of land lying idle while many youths are idle and can utilize it for better use.
