"Am not your boyfriend" is gender violence remark
lt was a shock and disbelief when Adam Duale MP for Garissa made a controversial remark in Parliament. This happened when the lawmakers were having a discussion on insecurity that is being witnessed in the vast Northern Kenya.Mr Duale took issue with Kisumu County Woman Representative Rozaah Buyu who was shouting at him when he was making his contribution. And Mr Duale told her "Am not your boyfriend".The chairperson who was chairing the session demanded that.Mr Duale takes back his statement and apologize. The former Majority Leader however remained defiant, stating that he had no need of a girlfriend. These utterances are demeaning ,and are out to embarrass the women representative involved, but also women in particular. How is a boyfriend remark involved in a parliamentary proceeding? How is a boyfriend replied to or answered to? Telling a woman in public is not only embarrassing her but it makes the woman feel that the person is superior and needs more respect than other men.The time when colleagues could put down a woman is long gone .The two are members of parliament with equal rights and in parliament she is allowed to interrupt. Therefore Mr Duale and men who see women as objects is long gone and they should treat women as colleagues. If am not correct both of them seems like they a grandfather and a grandmother how does a question of boyfriend arise? Mr Duale should apologize to Women Rep Rozaah buyu and Kenyan women in particular as a boyfriend remark is unnecessary is not in tandem with today's present set up.Mr Duale should withdraw the remark as as the language is unparliamentary.
