LET US HONOR SEAFARERS AS THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT IN THE WORLD
The day of the Seafareris is celebrated each year on June 25. The International Day of the Seafarer has now been officially
added to the United Nations' list of observance. On this day,
people pay respect to Seafarers and sailors who help the entire world
function by conducting sea transport. This is day
for seafarers of all stripes, from Coast Guards, to Navies, to every fisherman
and marine biologist and cruise ship captain are celebrated. If your job involves a large quantity
of salt water, then this day is dedicated to you. The primary way that people
celebrate International Day of the Seafarer is to thank sailors for their work.
People should share well-wishes for sailors and praise them for their hard
work. Seafarers are all individuals who are employed, engaged or working onboard a ship and who do not exclusively work on board while the ship is in port.Seafarers are people employed by a shipowner to do ship service on board a ship at sea, i.e. work performed by persons taking part in the ship's operation and maintenance as well as the provisioning of those on board.Seafarers can be persons who perform repair and maintenance work on ships, special ship personnel who have been engaged to work at sea on board a ship as well as cleaning and catering personnel.
Even now, global trade still depends on ocean transport, which is why Seafarers and sailors are essential to the
functioning of the world. Today, over 90% of global trade is done by sea, since
it is still the most cost-effective way to transport goods. Marine biologists
and oceanographers from every country have dedicated their lives to learning
more about the ocean depths, and humans from every walk of life keep going to
the sea to explore the planet. If trade by sea
were limited in some way, or stopped altogether, there is no way that the global
economy would be able to function. In other words, we owe our current ways of
le to those who travel the seas. Not only does trade by sea make up most of
the global economy, but also the oceans themselves take up about 70% of the
planet itself.
Over 1 million species of plants and animals live in the ocean,
and scientists estimate that there may be up to 9 million species in there that
haven’t been discovered yet. Everything we know about the ocean today, we know
thanks to the tireless work of thousands of oceanographers and marine
biologists who dedicate their lives to the study of those watery depths. Navies
keeping us safe in times of war, and we have Coast Guards to keep us safe from
natural disasters, criminal activity, and environmental deterioration. The
ocean, as important as it is, poses a significant threat to life, and
without those organizations, humans might be in even more dangers.
Seafarers face many dangers as they bring to you and I, ninety percent of what we will use in our daily lives. The threat of piracy and other reasons
sometimes is the reason why seafarers ship may not safely reach port, are
ever-present concerns. In Mombasa there is Mission to Seafarers (MTS) Hotel, through
its many alliances around the world, offers the seafarer a home from home, an
opportunity to communicate with loved ones and rest and relaxation whilst in
port. The Mission to Seafarers ensures the spiritual and physical wellbeing of
seafarers, as well as assisting them with social justice issue. There is
usually Mass Celebrated at the Holy Ghost Catholic Cathedral Mombasa and celebrated by a Bishop who is in
charge of seafarers, then the day ends in celebration at the mission to seamen,Mombasa.
In Mombasa
we have TVET colleges which should offer certificate in Nautical science and in Marine engineering and they do not offer courses related to the sea.
These could be certificate courses for being a seaman,
coast guards, Kenya ferry etc.Due to governments restrictions, seafarers are not allowed
to leave ships once they docked at various ports in a bid to contain spread of
coronavirus. The Kenya government has
rescued some members who had stayed without jobs for a long time. Due to the
existing agreement between the government and the Mediterranean Shipping
Company (MSC), over 500 Kenyan youth have been employed aboard MSC Cruise ships
before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The government announced formation of
a regulatory body in the shipping industry to protect local seafarers from
exploitation by multi-national company's. Let Multinational Shipping companies stop discriminating Kenyans in terms of
employment opportunities, wages and give them good working conditions. This will enhance Kenya's blue economy and offer more jobs to Kenya's youth.
