WHY IS KENYA RIDDLED WITH CORRUPTION AND KENYANS ARE GOD LOVING PEOPLE?
WHY IS KENYA RIDDLED WITH CORRUPTION AND KENYANS ARE GOD LOVING PEOPLE?
Christianity
is the main religion in Kenya. As of 2019, over 85 percent of the population identified
as Christians, among which 33.4 percent were Protestants, 20.6 percent
Catholics, 20.4 percent Evangelicals, and seven percent from African Instituted
Churches. Nearly 11 percent of Kenyan were Muslim. The practice of
religion in Kenya is real and children start following the religions of their
parents at an early age. There are Christians, Muslims as well as Hindu
religious leaders. On Sunday in rural counties it is rare to find people
walking about on Sunday. Some churches worship from morning to lunchtime or evening.
The elephant in the room is corruption. Corruption is manifested on the road by
the traffic police, in courts, tenders and government offices. How come these
people are the same ones who can be seen praying and praising God but
come Monday to Saturday corruption is at its peak. Parliament of Kenya
hosted the 18th Edition of the National Annual Prayer Breakfast on Thursday,
27th May, 2021 at the Senate Grounds in Parliament. President Uhuru Kenyatta,
and deputy President graced the occasion which was hosted by the two Speakers
of Parliament. The
National Prayer Breakfast is an annual ecumenical event offered under the
auspices of the Speakers of the National Assembly and the speaker of the
Senate; and organized by a group of dedicated volunteers which make up the
National Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee.
The purpose of
the National Prayer Breakfast is to meet, engage, interact and together pray
for the nation in the company of fellow leaders from all sectors of society.
But the two houses comprising of parliament and the senate are not sensitive to
the needs of the common mwananchi. Look at the rising prices of fuel and they
just look on without cushioning the common mwananchi who elected them. They
have not enacted the stringent laws which can deter corrupt people.
Let religious groups join hands
to eradicate this corruption in our midst. Let them preach in mosques
and churches eradication of corruption. They should preach about its vices and
condemn in public corruption like the way the catholic bishop removed their
shoes and condemned corruption. In Kenya today a prayer must be conducted
before any event begin. May it be a seminar, function or parliament proceeding,
but on the ground their religiosity cannot be seen in action. Members of the interfaith council should also involve themselves
in condemning corruption cases because Covid cases are similar like corruption
cases in Kenya and to deter more cases.
