Let the Government protect Lake Victoria fishermen
Let the Government protect Lake Victoria fishermen
We buried this fellow (name withheld) last month. He was of fisherman in Lake Victoria. The cause of death was that he was found floating in water and upon examination he was found to have injuries on his head and abdomen. I recall during our holidays in Busia, fishermen could passby every day at 4.00pm and my late mother would purchase fresh fish. This is the way of life of residents Samia and Bunyala. Fish is the delicacy.
A report that men in military gear seize fishermen boats, give them 100 stroke of the cane and are made to eat raw fish is not only dehumanizing but against human rights. These people do legal jobs of fishing to eke a living but are beaten, arrested, taken to court and are forced to pay 50,000/- to get back their gear. Some sold their house items and livestock to raise the money. The fishermen are held 24 hours and over 300 boat engines belonging to Kenya are held by UPDF soldiers.Currently Kenya has a dispute with Somalia and this dispute was taken to Hague, why is the Kenyan government ignoring the plights of Kenyan fishermen in Busia and Kisumu County? Where are MCA, MP’s nominated members and Governors to come to the rescue of the fishermen? Over 26,000 fishermen will be rendered jobless soon. Kenya has not deployed its policemen or soldiers on border, why Uganda's soldiers terrorising Kenyan residents and the Government is silent ? This and many questions continue troubling the residents of Busia and Kisumu County as Uganda's soldiers continue harrasing Kenyan fishermen. This has to stop.Tge police and soldiers duty is to protect it's citizens why the big silence?
