Stop the 20/- Kongowea market entrance deductions
Kongowea is the biggest market in Mombasa County and it gets very many visitors who come to buy as well as sell their produce daily.Outside Kongowea market there are very many goods on sale from clothes, shoes, socks, fruits, vegetables, handbags, soaps etc. Before a person enters the kongowea market there are alluring goods on sale which cannot escape a buyer from buying. So l and my visitors after buying some few items outside,we decided to enter the market for what brought us.We were rudely stopped by two County askari's on the entrance and told to each pay 20/- for the bags we were carrying. To express shock is an understatement. We tried to in vain to plead with the askari's to allow us leave our bags with the County askari's but they vehemently refused and became hostile. As we waited outside other market goers were also asked for the 20/- and majority did not pay and were turned away.We also tried to leave the bags with traders who were nearby and they refused saying they will be in hot soup with the County askari's.Security enhancement in the market is good for such a place but charging market goers 20/- is wrong before God. Kongowea market gets revenue from various lorries which come from all over Kenya that some produce are cheaper in Kongowea market than in Nairobi,Kisumu and Eldoret. This 20/- tax is illegal and should be stopped henceforth.lt denies stall owners customers and they pay for the stalls inside the market but remain without customers.Tourists visit markets and are always carrying their personal items on their backs and Mombasa County will lose these tourists who bring in foreign exchange to the Country because of such levies. Those who buy and sell market goods inside Kongowea market will also be affected.Let this market tax of 20/- be stopped forthwith as no one goes to the market without a bag.
