Why does Kenya prefer foreign CEO's
Kenya Airways has hired a polish veteran of the aviation industry to lead the national carriers turnaround plan. He is expected to take over the airline's group managing and chief executive by June 1st.KQ 's board chairman is michael joseph. Safaricom is headed by Bob collymore, mumias sugar was headed by Errol Johnson.Norwegian Johnny Anderson heads Kenya Airports Authority,BAT has Keith Gretton and CFO has John Tombleson among others. Why do we now have very many foreign CEO’s in Kenya? There must be a reason companies are hiring foreign CEO's. The main challenges to doing business in the country include political anxiety towards the upcoming general elections, bureaucracy, competition and challenges in accessing capital.”The World Bank’s Enterprise Survey 2013, identified practices of the informal sector, corruption and political Instability as the top business environment obstacles for firms in Kenya. We only believe that foreigners can lead us. But surprisingly the companies or organizations headed by foreigners tend to employ qualified people unlike those headed by Kenyans. Kenyans headed companies or organizations practice corruption, nepotism, tribalism and embezzlement of funds etc. This has been a big stumbling block to millions of graduates searching for jobs in Kenya. It is also alleged that, with a foreigner being a CEO,funding for projects can be easy. In foreign countries Kenyans cannot get such jobs as CEO's. Appointments in Kenya are always political rewards regardless of the age or qualification of an individual. In Parliament as long as you are favoured by the party in power,Parliament okays your appointment. A bill should be drafted in Parliament regarding the filling of vacant CEO's in Kenya. This comes close on the heels of the arrest of land commissioners with the allegation of missing billions of shillings in the land ministry. If 18 million can be found stashed in a house and billions are feared missing or misappropriated, this can dent the image of a Kenyan who may want to be a CEO’s in future from applying for such jobs.Roads are being built by chinese and companies are being run by foreigner, which way Kenya?
