The profit made by Safaricom is equal to the money stolen in National Youth Service

The profit made by Safaricom is equal to the money stolen in National Youth Service

Safaricom’s record-breaking Sh48 billion profit announced is overwhelming and inspiring. For the richest company in East Africa, money has been coming in from all directions, day and night. Safaricom offers efficient, trusted and competitive services unlike NYS which is government controlled and has strings of losses each year. Safaricom offers solid performance and has diversified its revenue streams, investments and strategies put in place are yielding results. Safaricom has remained resilient despite the macroeconomic headwinds of a prolonged election period, drought, low credit growth, uncertain regulatory environment and enhanced competitor activity. The employees at Safaricom give all their efforts and time to make safaricom attain the said profit and work for the future of Safaricom. But employees who are mandated to run NYS work with aims of getting as much profit  out of NYS for themselves as possible and they work as if there will be no tomorrow. NYS is a cash cow.  The National Youth Service (NYS) has been hit by a new loss of Sh10.5 billion scandal. The money was allegedly siphoned from the institution in the last three years, according to multiple sources, in a well-orchestrated scheme involving senior government officials and ghost suppliers. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) instituted investigations late last year and its findings reveal a trail of plundering of hard-earned taxpayers’ money. lt is a wonder how Sh10 billion could be siphoned out without the red flag being raised. The real elephant in the room must be addressed. Enough is enough. Senior civil servants who were not changed in the ministry of Youth and the NYS are the ones perpetrating this looting unlike a company like safaricom which is run by professionals who have to account for their performance and profits. These civil servants in NYS lack strong work ethics, consistently, positive attitude,self-motivated,team oriented and being effective communicators. Let Parliament propose that NYS be run by a contracted organisation through a competitive bidding which will nurture the youth and guard taxpayers money and also be answerable to the Kenyan public. This looting does not seem to stop in the near future if no drastic measures will be done soon. lf a judge in Mombasa jailed a bhang peddler for life, let these looters also be jailed for life also.
